Form Five graduates this year have been able to enjoy the convenience brought by information technology to look for sixth form places after the release of results of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE).

New World Mobility, a telecommunication company, provided a real-time mobile phone information service to help Form Five graduates find sixth form vacancies in schools across the territory.

With the use of WAP (wireless application protocol)phones, students could access schools' information and look for vacancies in schools.

The users of this service should pre-regis ter a maximum of five selected secondary schools and set their vacancy alert level at www.cheerypicks.com/edus6. Then, they receive free short messages from the telecommunication company, informing them of the number of vacancies available at their selected schools.

Besides New World, other mobile phone companies, CWHKT's 1010, One2Free, Orange, Smartone, Sunday and Peoples also provided similar services for Form Five graduates. The centralised information is provided by the Education Department and updated by schools. The services also work on older generation mobile phones and WAP phones, which can access the Internet.
