Wharf Cable prides itself on the fact that it has exclusive rights to English soccer. Every year it has shown the Charity Shield - the traditional curtain-raiser which whets the appetite for the forthcoming league season. This year Wharf Cable didn't show the game and instead showed live coverage of a pre-season friendly between Liverpool and Parma. But the Liverpool game didn't even have the option of an English commentary which is now such a common function in Hong Kong, even though the match was played in England. I would like to know: Why didn't Wharf Cable, with exclusive rights to English soccer, show the Charity Shield this year? Why didn't it inform people in advance that it wouldn't show the match? Why didn't the company make alternative arrangements with ATV or TVB to show the game? In the case of the Liverpool match, why was an English commentary not made available on Nicam? Will English soccer be broadcast in Nicam in the future, or will we only be able to watch matches in Cantonese? Surely, the expensive monthly fee should pay for this basic function.
