More than 3,500 electricity converters have been recalled after government tests found they overheated and in some cases led to electric shocks. The five brands of converter - a unit plugged into a wall socket to reduce voltage for an electrical appliance - tagged unsafe by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department were Sonics SC100 and Sonics SC182 distributed by Antartica, CT-100 distributed by Shun Hing Enterprise Development, Gold Ox WYT-100 distributed by Wah Yik Trading Company and Vanson FS-11 distributed by Vanson Electronics.
Sonics SC-100 is produced in Hong Kong while the other four are made on the mainland. The five have been on sale since early last year, selling at between $35 and $180. More than 3,000 Vanson converters and about 600 of the other models have been sold. Consumers can return the products to distributors for a refund.
