In Hong Kong

1962: The standard of salesmanship in Hong Kong was 'very poor', according to a visiting American salesman. M R Rosenburg said one of the main problems was local salesmen were grossly underpaid and lacked confidence; they needed salary incentives to make the grade.

1963: A new Hong Kong product, the spectacle radio, received orders for more than 10,000 sets from France and Britain. The spectacle frame incorporates a one-band radio with three transistors allowing the wearer a choice of three local radio stations without outside noise interference.

1964: Fireboats worked frantically to control a fire raging in the hold of a Norwegian ship. About 100 passengers were removed from the vessel after a fire broke out on the ship about 90 kilometres south of the territory. The hold contained 6,000 sacks of charcoal.

1973: More than 155,000 phoney Hutchison International shares, worth $2.6 million, were unearthed. The finding further threatened to erode confidence in the local markets as the Hang Seng Index closed at 606.79, down 16.79 points.
