A foreign businessman who made frequent trips to Hong Kong suffocated after being tied up with plastic tape and steel wire in a Tsim Sha Tsui guesthouse, a jury heard yesterday.

The body of Razzak Mohammed Abdur, 31, from Bangladesh, was found under a bed in one of the rooms, prosecutor Graeme Mackay told the Court of First Instance. He told the jury the motive for the killing was not known, but there was evidence Razzak had come to Hong Kong with US$30,000 (HK$231,000) in cash.

'If they didn't want money from him, they could have wanted the key to where he was living perhaps, or information from him, or it may have been a revenge attack of some kind,' Mr Mackay said.

Razzak's body was discovered on June 28 last year at the Nagoya guesthouse in Mirador Mansion, Nathan Road. Mr Mackay said a plastic sheet had been placed over his face and was held there tightly with plastic tape. Wire used to bind his wrists was also loosely knotted around his neck.

The cause of death was suffocation, which appeared to have been caused by the plastic tape wound around the victim's face, the prosecutor said.

Zabed Ali, 21, also from Bangladesh, pleaded not guilty to murdering Razzak on June 27 last year.

Mr Mackay said the victim lived with his wife and two daughters in Bangladesh, where he ran a successful sewing machine repair business.
