One hundred students brushed up their information technology (IT) skills by taking part in a training programme for free.
The Summer IT Training Programme, launched by i100 and sponsored by Citibank, aimed to equip students with IT knowledge and give them an understanding of the role of IT in finance and government.
Participants attended a two- week training course and a one- week camp. They were asked to do a group project and present it at the end of the course.
i100's technology vice-president Chan Yuk-mok said the company wanted to provide students with IT knowledge in different areas.
'We did not teach the students how to use computer programs. Instead, we helped them learn the mechanisms and theories behind them,' he said.
Mr Chan stressed the importance of a good database. 'No matter how impressive a Web site's graphics are, it will not be a good site without the backup of supportive servers. So we asked the students to create their own database for their projects.'
Philip Har Mung-fei, 17, a seventh former at St Mark's School, said taking part in the programme was a valuable experi ence. 'We discussed our ideas and worked out solutions together.'
