The attacks on Claire Fishwick's letter, 'People so much friendlier in spotlessly clean Lion City' (South China Morning Post, August 3) has targeted the messenger instead of the problems that affect our home and which prompted the letter.
One need only read surveys conducted by local government, international bodies and companies to see how the rest of the world views Hong Kong. Unfortunately, many of these surveys seem to agree with Ms Fishwick's observations.
If we tell every person who passes a negative judgment on our society to 'pack their bags and go' as one respondent suggests, we will be left with a community with no soul or conscience.
Ms Fishwick's letter may be brutal but it is not inaccurate. We as a society must consider these criticisms and attempt to improve the image we portray to the rest of the world.
