A DAB candidate promised last night to find out the source of a mysterious election survey revealed as being among documents circulated by one of Gary Cheng's public relations firms.

The survey, dated June 22, referred to the Legco candidature of David Lan Hong-tsung, who was then secretary for home affairs. His candidature was not formally announced until July 30.

Lau Kong-wah, who leads the DAB list in New Territories East, was quizzed by ex-legislator Allen Lee Peng-fei at an election forum last night. He said he had no idea about the survey, but promised to find out more in the process of internal investigation into the Cheng case. He said the report on Mr Cheng should be publicised.

'Mr Cheng made mistakes and I feel very sad that he did that,' said Mr Lau. 'But he has already apologised.'

Mr Lau called on the public not to impose a 'death penalty' on Mr Cheng. 'It is up to voters to decide whether Mr Cheng is qualified to be a legislator.' And he urged voters not only to focus on one issue, but consider whether Mr Cheng had served society for a long time.

Party chief Tsang Yok-sing has denied that the election survey was conducted by the party, saying it was done by a 'private firm'.
