Three contenders are battling it out in the catering sector, which has been given its own Legco seat for the first time.

Tommy Cheung Yu-yan of the Liberal Party, David Ng Tak-leung of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) and non-affiliated Leung Kwong-cheong are wooing the votes of restaurant owners, bakery staff, food vendors and others in a constituency with an electorate of 6,961.

Mr Cheung, convenor of the Hong Kong Catering Industry Association, is seen as a stronger contender than Mr Ng, chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades.

The seat replaces one of the two seats for the municipal councils that were scrapped last year. The other seat was taken by the District Council.

In 1995, Mr Cheung lost a battle for the then Hotel and Catering seat, which comprised a much larger electorate. An Eastern district councillor and former provisional urban councillor, Mr Cheung said he had visited more than 100 markets.

'The DAB is not that welcome by bosses in the catering sector as the party supports the minimum wage,' he said, referring to party heavyweight and unionist Chan Yuen-han's stance.
