Genetically Modified (GM) foods have gained much popularity in recent years. More than 40 per cent of soybeans produced in the United States are genetically modified. I strongly agree that GM foods have done more harm than good to all living things. Mankind, by applying its biotechnology in the field of agriculture and cattle rearing, has disturbed the balance of the ecosystem. Certain animals may not be able to adapt to these new 'foods'. So the food chain may break down. Men have ignored the needs of animals. Cows are made to grow fatter and bigger. They have to walk around every day miserably with the awful weight. The bone structure of cows was not designed to support such a large burden. The mutual interdependency between living organisms has been disrupted. Vegetarians may find themselves eating chicken genes when consuming lettuce! Those allergic to shrimps may also suffer after eating beef. Undoubtedly, GM foods have done some good. They have certainly solved the problem of food shortages by helping farmers to increase crop yield. Foods which are more nutritious have also been developed. Sze-long is a student at La Salle College
