Philip Bowring's article 'Hypocrisy in the race to play patriot games' (South China Morning Post, July 28) reflects the double standards of many of my friends and acquaintances in Hong Kong, the mainland and overseas. They may harbour a set of values in private while in public they make a lot of protestations which are diametrically opposite. I have heard senior University of Hong Kong academics, whose entire careers were spent in the United States and who carry US passports, sing praises to an undemocratic ideology.
