New Territories West candidate Tang Siu-tong yesterday urged villagers to vote for him amid fears his election chances may have been damaged by the DAB scandal.

Dr Tang, of the Hong Kong Progressive Alliance, is ranked second to Tam Yiu-chung under the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong banner.

Dr Tang, who said his campaign had reached a critical moment, visited voters and leaders from the rural affairs body Heung Yee Kuk, of which he is a member.

Speaking with outlying islands' village representatives, Dr Tang said: 'The situation is tough now and there's keen competition. We might have difficulties co-operating with the DAB again if the rural camp fails to grab more votes. We have to show the Heung Yee Kuk has the ability to get enough votes.'

But Heung Yee Kuk chairman Lau Wong-fat said: 'We don't find there is any problem. Let's wait for September 10 [the voting day] and see whether there is any impact.'
