Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan Fang On-sang yesterday declined to say if Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's senior special adviser, Andrew Lo Cheung-on, should quit his post.
Ming Pao reported yesterday that she had made the suggestion to Mr Tung to restore public confidence in the administration and the civil service after the saga of pollster Robert Chung Ting-yiu.
She was said to have been at odds with Mr Tung after her request was turned down, although yesterday she said the two of them got along very well.
A University of Hong Kong panel has just finished investigating claims by Dr Chung that he was told the Chief Executive was unhappy with his surveys on the Government's popularity. The panel's report could be made public as early as tomorrow.
A spokesman for the Chief Executive's Office yesterday declined to say whether Mrs Chan had made such a request. 'We do not discuss in public internal deliberations within the Government or advice tendered to the Chief Executive.'
Mr Lo refused to comment yesterday on whether he had been asked to quit.
