A FORMER student leader wants to emulate ex-legislator Ronald Arculli if he is elected next Sunday.
Richard Tsoi Yiu-cheong, an ex-legislative aide, hopes to use his legal background to succeed Mr Arculli as the 'king of bills' in the new legislature.
Mr Tsoi, 32, says: 'Now that Mr Arculli has decided not to stand, it's of paramount importance for someone who is familiar with the law and the legislature to play the role as a good gatekeeper [in the legislature].'
He became involved in politics when he was a student at Chinese University in the 1980s. He was a core leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students and a law graduate at the University of Hong Kong.
He was the legislative aide of unionist Lau Chin-shek from 1991 until May, when he decided to try to win a seat in the legislature. He is now on a joint ticket with Emily Lau Wai-hing of The Frontier in the New Territories East constituency. While Ms Lau will almost certainly win a seat, it is widely believed Mr Tsoi will take a second seat.
But Mr Tsoi says it is hard to tell who is under most pressure.
