The Government met organisers of rave parties for the first time to discuss the problem of drug use at the increasingly popular parties.
About 26 rave party organisers met with 60 police officers and representatives from the Narcotics Division, the Hong Kong Medical Association, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre. A code of practice for rave parties was recommended at the meeting.
Drug abuse backgrounds
It was proposed that drug warnings be printed on tickets to raise awareness and posters be put up at the venues to remind youngsters to stay away from drugs.
It was also recommended that party staff be checked for drug abuse backgrounds and a strict entrance code be observed to keep those under 18 out of the events.
The organisers were advised to patrol the venues and notify the police immediately if they find anyone selling or using drugs.
Dr Tam Wing-kun, chairman of the Taskforce on Psychotropic Substance Abuse, hoped these measures would help to maintain a healthy culture at the parties.
