Singapore Telecom (SingTel), the island state's dominant telecommunications carrier, has forged a strategic alliance with China Netcom on the mainland.

China Netcom - the mainland's fourth-ranked fully-licensed telecom operator - and SingTel will combine to offer intra-corporate communications services between the mainland and business destinations.

Under the alliance, they will jointly market and distribute the facility, which provides end-to-end services to their respective clients.

SingTel executive vice-president Lim Chuan Poh expected the China Netcom 'twin venture' would be able to generate annual revenues of up to US$40 million during the next three years.

This first 'twin venture' allows SingTel direct exposure to the mainland's telecommunications business through China Netcom.

'This is the way we do it in places where we cannot make a direct equity investment,' Mr Lim said.
