Newly-elected DAB legislator Choy So-yuk yesterday thanked voters on Hong Kong Island, where she triumphed despite forecasts that she could have become a casualty of the Gary Cheng scandal.

Ms Choy, ranked second on the party list to Mr Cheng, dashed the Democrats' hopes of securing a third seat in the constituency.

She focused her efforts on North Point and Quarry Bay, where her loyalist supporters live, rather than joining team members in other districts.

But unlike her emotional campaign of two days previously in which she shouted slogans and urged voters to cast their ballots in favour of those who 'love China and love Hong Kong', Ms Choy's tour of thanks was completed in less than two hours.

Democratic Party leader Martin Lee Chu-ming also thanked his voters yesterday. He told them he would carry out his election pledge to fight for their interests. 'If they have any difficulty or problem, they should come to us. We will try to help them solve the problem,' he said.

The leader of the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood, Frederick Fung Kin-kee, was warmly greeted by his voters in Kowloon City. The party returned toLegco with a surge of support in Kowloon West.
