SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings has formed alliances with Sun Microsystems of the United States and Siemens of Germany to develop Java technology-based wireless interactive services for the GSM network in Asia.
With a Java-enabled phone, utilising the global system for mobile communications standard, users can download programmes such as games, city guidebooks and maps, said Daniel Yu, president of Sun Microsystems' Greater China division.
SmarTone said it would launch the first Siemens Java-enabled handset in the first half of next year.
Ian Stone, chief executive of SmarTone, said the technology would enable customers to enjoy interactive content over a speedy wireless network.
Mr Stone said the company also was holding negotiations with potential partners for third-generation mobile licences in Taiwan.
However, he declined to identify the potential partners.
