For more than 36 years, Yucca De Lac, a well-known outdoor Chinese restaurant in the mid-levels of Sha Tin, has been a place of romance and nostalgia.

However, the good old days will fade into history as the legendary place cannot withstand the pressure of development and will soon be closed and transformed into a residential complex.

This year the restaurant's owners received Town Planning Board approval to convert the 0.69-hectare site for residential use.

It can provide a gross floor area of 44,563 square feet with a plot ratio of 0.6 times for high-end, low-density, residential development.

Pang Chien-ting, one of the owners, said the historic restaurant, owned by several members of the Pang family, probably would close next year.

It was not an easy decision to close the restaurant after more than three decades in business, he said.
