Maddy certainly knows when to cross the Atlantic. She wouldn't trust Britain's dilapidated National Health Service with delivering her baby, and who can blame her?

But wisely, she trusted her Music to British songwriter and producer William Orbit and French maestro Mirwais Ahmadza.

The result? A healthy baby and a healthy comeback.

Music, Madonna's 14th album, is as smooth as ever. But, with Mirwais particularly, she has peppered it with vocoders and funky Euro-dance beats that are the trademark of Daft Punk and Air.

Dodgy lyrics aside, Runaway Lover is a driving dance tune of its own. Orbit, behind Madonna's last album Ray Of Light, recreates that sound on Amazing.

But Music peters out. What It Feels Like For A Girl is a tedious remnant of old, while the inclusion of American Pie is the disc's great tragedy, a cloying finale to an otherwise sparkling return from the master, or rather mistress, of reinvention.
