Dr Kristy Ong Cua, 28, an assistant professor in the Information and Systems Management Department, was discovered about 400 metres from the university pier. She was barefoot.

The discovery was made about 9.30am by a woman in a boat who alerted police. It came just minutes before an air, sea and land search was to be launched.

Officers said they checked the same place during a search between 3pm and 8pm on Thursday. 'We believe the body was washed ashore this morning,' said Detective Chief Inspector Law Poon-kei, of Kwun Tong district crime squad.

Cua was believed to have been dead for two days, he said. There were no suspicious circumstances. An autopsy will be carried out today.

'We will check her personal computer and phone calls that she made before she went missing. We want to find out who she telephoned and contacted through e-mail or ICQ,' Inspector Law said.
