Director of Education reveals exciting strategy for schools at St Clare's

THE Education Department is working on a scheme to improve the study atmosphere in schools.

This was revealed by Mr Dominic Wong Shing-wah, Director of Education, at St Clare's Girls' School's annual graduation ceremony, held recently .

The guest of honour said the Education Department had issued guidance circulars on the teaching of Chinese Language and Chinese History.

The strategy has received wide support from parents, students and members of the public.

''I appeal to all teachers of these two subjects to adopt the strategies outlined and make learning a pleasurable and rewarding experience for students in Hongkong,'' Mr Wong said.

He added that the Education Department was working on guidance circulars on the teaching of other subjects. These will be issued consecutively within the next few months.

The Education Department will also launch a publicity campaign to encourage schools to adopt the Whole School Approach to Guidance for both primary and secondary schools.

''Under this approach, the whole school (that is, principals, teachers and students) and parents will be motivated to work together to create a positive, caring and better school environment, to assist students in their studies and in solving their behavioural, developmental and social problems, and to help them appreciate the value of life,'' Mr Wong said.

He was confident the new approach would make study more enjoyable for students and help them learn more effectively.

The Director of Education also mentioned that the Education Department would promote ''home-school co-operation''.

''We have already set up a Committee on Home-School Co-operation, which has drawn up a programme of work to bring schools and homes closer together, to promote a positive attitude, and to encourage the establishment of more parent-teacher associations.'' With such understanding and co-operation, Mr Wong was confident problems at school and at home could be resolved much more easily and satisfactorily.

Also addressing the graduates was the principal, Mrs Eunice Wong.

She said St Clare's had expanded in the past year, and now had one more Form 6 class.

''The school's expansion, along with expansion in post-secondary and tertiary institutions, will mean immense benefits for our students,'' she said.

Scholarships and awards for academic excellence and outstanding performance in service and sports were presented.

Seventh-formers Magdelena Lam Fung-yu and Iris Mak Ho-yan, and fifth-former Annie Poon Pui-ying topped the list in academic performance.
