South Korea is to consider imposing restrictions on yellow croaker fish imported from China - two months after the countries ended a damaging dispute over garlic.

According to the government-run Central News Agency of Taiwan, China has increased exports of yellow croaker to Korea in the past few years.

Last year, the figure reached 54,100 tonnes.

In the first quarter, Chinese exports of 25,100 tonnes represented about 86.8 per cent of South Korea's market.

Increased imports are partly due to declining fishing of yellow croaker in Korean waters. Last year, just 13,700 tonnes of yellow croaker were caught.

Korean trade officials will assess within 30 days a marine department study on the impact of Chinese exports and decide in four months whether to impose quota or tariff restrictions.
