The catch cry of the post-1997 Government is 'Hong Kong a World Class City'.
Reading our local papers every day shows how hollow this statement is and how surreal life is in Hong Kong.
The continual flap over naming the area south of Hollywood Road shows how xenophobic the local residents are in this part of Mid-Levels. They should grow up.
As a long-term resident of the Mid-Levels area, it has been a pleasure to see quality restaurants moving up the escalator. Compared with the dirty cockroach-infested restaurants of the past, these establishments are a 100 per cent improvement.
What makes this discussion more puerile is the fact that if the situation was reversed and it was Chinatown in London where the non-Chinese residents did not wish to call the area Chinatown, because of the association to crime, drugs and triads, there would be a huge outcry.
Our city will never become a 'World Class City' if local residents act like spoiled children every time they are faced with a more cosmopolitan environment. Mid-Levels has become a more exciting and friendlier place to live and I hope wiser minds will step forward to promote the area so it grows and prospers.
