The Hong Kong Hotel Association has issued an environmental assessment scheme for hotel buildings as part of the programme to keep the industry competitive into the 21st century.
Jean-Marie Leclercq, convenor of the association's environmental committee, said the scheme was aimed at fostering environmentally friendly management and operation practices for local hotels as such issues were of fundamental importance.
He said it was aimed at maintaining the competitiveness of SAR hotels amid the global industry.
There are growing concerns about the quality of the local environment, with both the Government and the private sector being urged to improve the quality of buildings.
To demonstrate its commitment to reducing environmental impact, the association said it commissioned the Department of Buildings Services Engineering to develop the assessment scheme for hotels.
Improving environmental performance is broadly interpreted in the scheme to mean reducing the consumption of natural resources and waste and effluents, while maintaining a comfortable, healthy and productive indoor environment.
