Wong Kam-po is back on the road again. Following his commendable performances in the velodrome at the Olympics, the SAR's road racing star is going to hold talks with more professional teams at the World Championships in France this week.
Wong was already looking beyond the Olympics before it started because he only took part in the point race, a track event at Sydney 2000, finishing 11th out of 24 riders. He failed to qualify for the road race - his strongest discipline.
He believes this week's World Road Race Championships in Lorient will provide a good chance for him to secure a contract as most of the professional teams will be there.
'Some professional teams have been in contact with me, but we haven't decided which team to join yet. We're going to talk to more teams over the next few months. Hopefully, we can finalise the matter by the end of the year,' the Asian Games road race champion said. The 27-year-old added: 'I'll race either in the United States or in Europe, but I prefer the US.'
Wong insists that representing Hong Kong will never be second to his dream of competing against the likes of Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.
He said: 'I have decided to defend my title in the All-China Games and also compete in the Asian Championships next year. I'll have to make sure my professional racing won't clash with these two tournaments.
'I expect that I will not be competing in so many pro races in my first season, so I should be able to return to compete for Hong Kong.
