Choir members of Baptist University (HKBU) have done the institute proud on its 25th anniversary by winning awards at Choir Olympic 2000 in Linz, Austria.
According to conductor Andrew Cheung Yuk-kwan, director of university-wide music activities at HKBU, over 500 choirs, totalling 18,000 people from nearly 60 countries, took part in the event.
The university's choir and girls' choir both won bronze awards.
Mr Cheung said the awards were a pleasant surprise. 'I was completely nervous standing on the stage. However, we were able to complete our performance within the scheduled time.'
Year two students Diana Doo, 22, and Cecilia Cheng Wing-sum, 21, are members of the girls' choir. It was the two Music Department students' first trip to Austria.
Ms Doo, who majors in piano, said the trip brought her and her campus colleagues closer together. 'We might not have known each other if we hadn't taken part in the competition together.'
She said the students had to pay $8,000 each for air tickets and accommodation, but the university helped.
