The decision came after Ms Eu SC, won backing from the Democratic Party last week when it decided not to field its own candidate in the Hong Kong Island poll.

The party has been urging her to announce her participation as soon as possible. Ms Eu and the party hope she will draw support from all pro-democracy voters, avoiding a possible split between several democratic candidates.

'We will make our utmost efforts to support her,' Democratic Party chairman Martin Lee Chu-ming said last night.

The seat - up for grabs on December 10 - was vacated by disgraced former Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong vice-chairman Gary Cheng Kai-nam. Mr Cheng resigned the seat after being re-elected in the constituency on September 10.

He admitted having concealed a consultancy firm from Legco, passing on a confidential document he obtained from the Government to a business contact, and having an extra-marital affair.

Among the backers of Ms Eu, a former Bar Association chairman, is non-affiliated legislator Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee, who represents the legal profession.
