Updated at 1.45pm: A Cathay Pacific Airlines airbus, carrying 99 passengers, was forced to land in Taipei Zhongzheng Airport on Friday morning following fears of a possible fire on board the plane.

The A340 airbus, flight CX 410, left Hong Kong for Seoul at 9.55am. About an hour later passengers and cabin crew members became alarmed by ''a burning smell'', said Cathay corporate communications manager Lisa Wong Lai-shan.

''For the sake of safety we decided to land the plane,'' she explained.

The passengers, who arrived safely in Taipei, are awaiting transfer to Seoul. Cathay said it has sent a transport flight from Hong Kong.

The incident is being investigated.
