THE Allied Group and Lee Ming Tee will hear today whether they have been successful in their latest bid to challenge the grounds of the government-appointed investigation into the company and others linked with it.

In particular, it is understood Mr Lee may be attempting to prevent publication of the findings. Justice Kaplan will deliver judgement today on their application for leave to apply for judicial review. The hearing is scheduled to take place in chambers.

The inspector, Nicholas Allen, of accountant Coopers and Lybrand, was appointed to look into the affairs of the Allied Group and nine linked companies in August.

The latest attempt to thwart the $41 million probe follows director Ronald Tse Chu-fai's bid last November to prohibit the inspector from carrying out an investigation of the company as it relates to him.

His request, based on the Bill of Rights, was thrown out of court and prompted both the inspector's counsel and the judge to dismiss his argument as ''gobbledygook''.

A subsequent attempt at appeal, based on an amendment of the grounds of appeal, also failed.
