Hong Kong couples are having sex far more often than they were two years ago, according to figures released yesterday that show the economic recovery has given a boost to love lives.

SAR people, long considered to be among the world's worst lovers, now have sex an average of once every 4.3 days - a 50 per cent jump from 1998 when they confessed to a performance of just once every 6.4 days.

'One of the reasons is that the Hong Kong economy has been much better and people feel much more relaxed. I think if you feel more relaxed, then you can spend more time doing other things,' said Eleanor Mok Wai-ting, general manager of Durex condom-maker SSL Healthcare Hong Kong. 'Also, more people go to China for business and leisure. Maybe they're taking condoms with them and their sexual behaviour has increased.'

The annual Durex survey asked 18,000 people in 27 countries how often they had sex, when they lost their virginity, how many partners they had had, and who they thought were the world's sexiest people.

Worldwide, the average number of sexual encounters in the past year was 96 - or one every 3.8 days. Americans claimed to have the most sex, 132 times a year, followed by Russians with 122 and the French with 121.

Despite Hong Kong's rise up the love ladder, it ranks 21st out of the 27 countries and territories surveyed, ahead of Italy, Taiwan, Thailand, the mainland and Malaysia. The Japanese came bottom, having sex just once every 9.9 days.
