Updated at 6.52pm: The Chief Executive approved the Kowloon-Canton Railway's proposed cross-harbour Hung Hom - Tsim Sha Tsui rail link on Thursday. The link is part of the Ma On Shan - Tai Wai Rail Extension. A government spokesman stressed the importance of the 11.4km link in meeting the transport needs of Mo On Shan and Sha Tin residents, and facilitating the further development of these areas. 'We are committed to implementing both the Ma On Shan Rail and Tsim Sha Tsui Extension for completion by 2004,' the spokesman said. The Tsim Sha Tsui Extension will help ease congestion at Kowloon Tong Station by providing a second interchange between the Mass Transit Railway and East Rail lines. The two rail extension projects, to begin construction in late 2000, were proposed in the 1994 Railway Development Strategy.
