Journalists slam draft broadcasting code

Updated at 4.21pm: The Hong Kong Journalists' Association (HKJA) said on Thursday that a new draft broadcasting code of conduct reflected civil servants' unacceptable lust for power.

It rejected the new provisions on conflict of interest and personal opinion, and said that checks should be introduced for appointments to the Broadcasting Authority.

Chairperson of the HKJA, Mak Yin-ting, said the Broadcasting Authority ''is powerful and has a strong influence on radio and TV, two of the most powerful media in Hong Kong.''

''It is not acceptable that members are simply selected on the will of the Chief Executive,'' she said.

The Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau refused to comment on the HKJA's reaction to the draft code of conduct.

''We are undergoing a public consultation process, so we have nothing to say about their reaction,'' said Bureau spokeswoman.
