New exams are expected to take the place of English and Chinese tests in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and A-levels.

The Hong Kong Examination Authority is studying possible replacement language tests proposed by the Education Commission at the end of last month. Authority secretary Choi Chee-cheong said the authority was likely to release a report on the new exam within six months.

The commission recommended introducing a public examination in Chinese and English covering different levels of proficiency.

Mr Choi said the authority would launch the English-language test first and the Chinese test would follow. Students can sit the exam at different learning stages to acquire the qualifications they need.

'The new language test is open to everybody and there will be no age limit for the candidates. Even a Secondary Three student can sit for the test to prove their competence in English,' Mr Choi said.

Only Form Five students and private students over 19 can sit the HKCEE. Candidates for A-level examinations must have passed six subjects in the HKCEE.
