Jimi Hendix, Patti Smith, P.J. Harvey, Sly Stone, Serge Gainsbourg ... for self-proclaimed 'fashion DJ' Christophe Lemaire, every collection starts with a song.
'It's a puzzle,' says 35-year-old French designer Christophe Lemaire. 'There's always a musical feeling connected to each season. For women, it was pop music this time. I wanted everything to be fresh and catchy, with a twist - like a two-minute song.' The men's collection, however, took its inspiration from British mods: 'These were guys who went to clubs, listened to 1960s' soul music all night, and wore slim suits with parkas, elegant clothes with workwear. It was about laddish elegance in an almost middle-class way,' he says.
The marriage of fashion and function, sophistication and streetwear, has been a Lemaire trademark since he started his own label 10 years ago: 'As much as I admire Madeleine Vionnet, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent - he is my master - I belong to a different generation and need to do something more personal, more real. I don't like fashion that tries to be too clever.'
He wears a wrinkled, cotton-metal shirt ($890) and jeans ($1,590). She wears a faux-fur top ($2,990) and denim jeans ($1,290). All from
