Unique symbol of HK must be preserved

Hongkong Tramways' proposal to upgrade Hong Kong trams will leave the new models looking a lot like buses.

The existing model of trams has served the city for almost a century and has become a unique symbol of Hong Kong.

If the existing style of tram is phased out, Hong Kong will be losing this symbol.

Nowadays, we are more aware of the importance of preserving our heritage. In my opinion, our heritage should not just be confined to preserving old buildings. We should also be ensuring our trams are not changed.

They offer people a cheap means of transportation.

They are very popular with tourists and with short-distance passengers.

I think that the wooden frame provides a very 'oriental' touch.
