A senior Chinese University professor who faces dismissal over allegations that he beat his wife has attacked the university as being unfair and 'lacking the spirit of the rule of law'.
Wong Wai-leung, a professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, said he received a report on Saturday from the university council's appeals committee, which was responsible for considering his complaint.
The university council is to give a final verdict on Monday on whether Professor Wong, alleged to have beaten his wife in 1998, would be dismissed. The professor, who has taught at the university for 24 years, was told on June 13 that he had been removed from appointment because of conduct 'immoral, scandalous and disgraceful in nature, bringing the university into disrepute'.
He said the three-page report by the appeals committee did not give a clear conclusion on his case and left the council to decide on his fate. He said he did not accept the report, saying the method and approach of the inquiry was wrong and unreasonable.
'Some comments are unfavourable to me and it is hard to guess whether the council will stick to the previous recommendation,' he said.
Professor Wong denied any wrongdoing, saying that the university should not have interfered in his family dispute. He threatened to seek a judicial review if his appeal failed.
