Thirty trainee teachers from the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) received certificates for completing their one-year internal course on counselling.
Over 100 students have taken the Peer Counselling Training Programme, now in its third year.
The programme aims to provide support for first year HKIEd students and promote a spirit of mutual help among students. Participants help their younger fellows adapt to the new learning environment and solve problems they come across in their studies.
Senior counsellor and the chief programme developer of the Student Affairs Office, Jennifer Yim Shui-wa, said: 'This is the largest programme ever organised by the Student Affairs Office. This year thanks to extra funding, the scale of the programme was larger and we were able to work with an outside partner for the first time.'
The HKIEd students take eight three-hour training sessions each week.
Tarin Choi Chun-Ho, a second year HKIEd student majoring in English, said he had a much better understanding of how to care about people around him. 'I remember when I was in my first year, I was confused and disorientated. It took me months before I could get my bearings. With this programme, I'm sure others will not have to go through the anxiety I suffered,' he said.
