1963: Schoolboy Robert Loh won the annual Cross Harbour race, swimming the 1,600-metre distance in 19 minutes 14.9 seconds. Joan Liu Kin-wah won the women's section in the race that attracted 349 competitors.

1967: A riot broke out at the Prince's Building during a performance by pop singer Irene Ryder. The crowd of 400 mostly teenaged boys, surged forward during a 'hip-swinging number' and the show had to be stopped, temporarily, by the organiser, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries.

1969: Hong Kong schools were divided on the mini-skirts issue as some had imposed a ban while others were permitting their use. 'We don't object to them wearing mini-skirts outside school. We want them to look like children when at school,' a spokesman for Mansfield College in Kowloon said.

1971: Unchecked pollution would wipe out all life by 2050, said David Robertson of the Hong Kong Conservancy Association. 'I can see a day when children will be coughing their way to school,' he said.
