THE hygiene chief is standing firm on a 'spying' order to root out lazy municipal services workers.
Secretary for Environment and Food Lily Yam Kwan Pui-ying said yesterday diligent staff had nothing to fear.
Six quality-assurance teams, with a total of 16 members, were set up last month to conduct surprise checks on staff to ensure they were doing their jobs properly.
Mrs Yam said: 'There is public demand for the Government to make better use of resources and provide better services. If workers understand the work of the teams, I do not think it will pose any morale problem.'
The crackdown came after court cases involving lazy workers. On Friday, a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officer received six months' jail for conspiring to defraud the Government with false work records.
