Before you took part in TVB's  New Talent Singing Contest, did  you ever think of embarking on  a showbiz career?

Although I did not win anything,  I am proud of my performance that night. It was the first time I had sung before an audience. When I was waiting backstage, I told myself: 'Leung Hon- man, don't be afraid. Try your best.'

Who influenced you to be come a singer?

My whole family likes music. When I was a child,  I listened to my sister playing the piano. Besides, my parents kept the hi-fi set turned on throughout the day.

I discovered I had a flair for singing and performance when I was young. I became a choir member when  I was in primary school. Besides my dream to become a singer, I wanted to be a famous magician or a footballer.  I never thought of being a doctor or a lawyer.

Have you felt unhappy with your singing career at any time?

I am a little disappointed at the moment because I feel that my record company is not giving me enough publicity. Maybe it's time for a change, but I haven't thought about it yet.

Did your family have an influence on your personality?

Yes, we enjoy each other's company. My two sisters are married to brothers and we all get along very well. I dislike living alone and I enjoy being in crowded places.

Can you tell me about your  relationship with your mother?

I seldom talk about my mother in front of other people. We have a very close relationship.   Although we seldom talk, we know each other very well.  She's not the type of person who will stop and say 'I love you', because it's embarrassing for her. But she is nevertheless a loving mother.

Do you feel unhappy that  some people compare you with your friends Andy Hui Chi-on  and Eason Chan Yick-shun?

This actually came up a long time ago. I don't mind because people will grow up. I am already tired of artists being called 'kings of Canto-pop'. Besides, they are all my friends.

Do you think starring in a TV drama brought you more fame than as a singer?

I think anybody in showbiz can become famous.  However, the important thing is what you are  going to do afterwards. I really don't care whether I appear on the front page of newspapers, but I am determined to hone my skills and show what I can do.

I am not a guy who will invite paparazzi to take pictures of me while I take a dip in the pool.  Sometimes it depends on what you can do  for yourself.

I mean, you can even play tricks to boost your popularity, but that is a matter of conscience.

You should not make a gain by hurting other people.

Do you think it is difficult to  meet good friends in the enter tainment scene?

No,  making friends mostly depends on your sincerity. You can't sit and expect someone to treat you nicely.  Sometimes, you have to help your friends first. If a person makes up his mind to receive benefits from others without reciprocating, he or she may easily become trapped.  Of course, if someone betrayed me, I would feel upset. But, I would never regret what I did for him.

Do your showbiz friends in fluence your attitudes towards the entertainment business?

Yes.  When we sit down together, we share a lot of things. For example, some artists would share their work experiences with me.

I remember once Eason Chan told me that he was impressed  by my attitude towards work and my personality. And,  through communication and observation, I can learn from him.

Can you imagine your life when you are 50 years old?

I think the 50-year-old Leung Hon-man will have a wife. I don't know whether I will continue to sing. Actually, it will depend on the market.

What is your goal?

Winning singing awards is no longer my aim. I hope to stage a concert or produce a CD album. The songs will be based on piano music and I hope to play the piano myself.

As for my life-long goal, I hope to set up a music school. My showbiz friends  will teach students to sing,  dance and play musical instruments.

I hope all the singers could pass on their skills to the younger generation. For example, Eddie Ng Kwok-king can teach students to compose songs. But to teach singing,  I think William So       Wing-ho will be the perfect person.  I hope I can teach students to play the piano.

Are you afraid that people may not recognise you when you are old?

No. I think if you are a successful singer, you can earn your recognition any time.

Under what circumstances would you leave the showbiz world?

I think this decision must be made by the audience. One day, when you find that your songs are no longer accepted, then it is time to say goodbye.

Failure spurred Edmond Leung Hon-man to work harder in his bid to reach the top of the local entertainment industry.

He came across his first hurdle when he walked  away empty-handed after taking part in the eighth New Talent Singing Contest organised by TVB, but he was not discouraged.

The singer-cum-actor has since won over thousands of teenage fans, besides being the recipient of several awards for his contribution to the showbiz industry.

Asked what he thinks of his 10-year  involvement in the entertainment scene,  Leung says he is much more serious than before, and hopes to be a versatile performer one day.

And judging by his progress so far, that day is not far off.
