Curling Mascara

Ever since I was a small girl, I have wished that my short, straight eyelashes were long and curly like all the wide-eyed, Western girls you see in magazines.

Thank God for mascara. Like many Asian women, I would be an unhappy woman without it and it seems that cosmetic companies are taking note. Suddenly, all the big brand names are coming out with products that promise 'long, lustrous, curled' lashes that last forever. I put four of them to the test. While none of the mascaras managed to transform my lashes into Christy Turlington's in those TV ads - for that, you definitely need an eyelash curler - it was easy to distinguish the good ones from the phonies. Here's what happened:

1) Max Factor Curve & Curl ($160 from Max Factor counters).

What they say: Touch-proof mascara promising curled lashes with its special ingredients and curved brush.

Verdict: One day I had a chat with a make-up artist friend. He went on so much about Max Factor's mascara that I wondered whether he worked for the company. But when I read about the make-up artist for the blockbuster film Titanic recommending Max Factor, I decided to give it a go.

Curve & Curl is the best mascara I have ever used. It produces a satisfactory curling effect, even without an eyelash curler. Used together with the curler, the effect was long lasting and lengthened my lashes without clumps. And thanks to its touchproof formula, there's no need to worry about 'panda eyes'. Bravo! 4/5
