A MISS Hongkong finalist, whose nude pictures caused the withdrawal this week of a popular magazine, had agreed to pose to help a photographer practise, it was revealed yesterday. Documents supporting an injunction against the distribution of Eastweek magazine, which printed seven nude pictures of Teresa Mak Ka-ki, claimed that she was not paid for the pictures. The affidavits said a man introduced to Miss Mak two years ago by a friend asked if she would pose as a model for him to practise his photographic skills. She agreed and the photographer took three rolls of film, some with her clothes on and others without. Miss Mak said the photographer had returned all the negatives to her later, which she had destroyed by cutting them into pieces. Her family knew nothing about it until one of the pictures appeared in the Oriental Daily News on Monday. The 17-year-old student's father, Mak Hau-shing, approached the photographer after seeing the picture in the newspaper and bought the copyright on all 108 pictures for one dollar, according to an affidavit. Mr Mak applied to the High Court the following day for an interim injunction to stop the distribution of Eastweek, which publicised that it would carry a story on Miss Mak in its latest issue. The Chinese-language magazine, which was due out on Wednesday, was recalled but some copies had already been sold. Miss Mak, who lost in the Miss Hongkong final last Sunday, had denied in the article that the girl in the pictures was her. Meanwhile, the Mak family said they were to take legal action against the Oriental Press Group, which owns both the magazine and the Oriental Daily News. The lawyer representing the family, Gilbert Collin, said yesterday they would also seek a permanent injunction from the High Court when the interim order expired on Friday. Mr Collin said the family were in China at the moment but they had already expressed the intention to sue the newspaper group. A source in the Oriental Press Group said they decided to carry the article only after Miss Mak had repeatedly denied that she was the girl in the nude pictures. The press group would wait to see what action the Maks might take before deciding on the next step, the source said.
