Ruttonjee Hospital, formerly a naval and military hospital, was founded by Indian businessman and philanthropist Dhun Ruttonjee, who served on the Legislative Council in the 1960s.

In 1949, the hospital in Queen's Road East, Wan Chai, was converted into the Ruttonjee Sanatorium with the support of the businessman and the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association.

But after a drop in the number of TB patients, the Government transformed it into a general hospital, renaming it Ruttonjee Hospital in 1991. In April 1998, it was integrated with Tang Shiu Kin Hospital to improve efficiency.
