Beverage company Vitasoy has reversed its policy on bottle recycling after it was criticised for dropping a deposit system by environmentalists.

Under the new policy, two charity organisations - the Salvation Army and World Vision - will help collect Vitasoy's bottles in return for a 50-cent donation for each one collected.

Two convenience store chains will continue receiving used bottles and consumers will be given 50 cents for each bottle returned.

Last month, the company suddenly cancelled its deposit system where consumers had to pay extra but received a refund of $1 per bottle. The move brought criticism from green groups.

'We have never stopped recycling our bottles even after cancelling the deposit system,' said Fransis Kong Ming-yin, managing director of Vitasoy International Holdings. He said the recycling rate for bottles had dropped significantly in recent years, but refused to give details.

'The new initiative is not brought by external pressure,' Mr Kong said.
