Freedom of assembly a human right
The issue over the Public Order Ordinance is not simply a case of a group of people who broke a law. It is all about basic human rights. Freedom of assembly is a basic human right for everyone.
The Public Order Ordinance states that people who want to demonstrate need to give seven days' notice, but international law requires only 24 hours' notice.
In charging members of the Federation of Students and pro- democracy activists, the Government is threatening all citizens.
History has shown us that suppressing peaceful protests is not the answer. Such action will only give rise to greater unrest.
The Secretary for Security advised people not to pressure the Government. I disagree. If we do not put pressure on, nothing will change. The secretary ridiculed the media, which has a responsibility to keep a check on the Government.
The Government is trying to ignore the people's wishes. I believe that unless the Government becomes more tolerant we will have another June 4th incident. Next time it will happen in Hong Kong.
