I refer to the letter from J. Lee headlined, 'Costly and pointless' (South China Morning Post, October 24), questioning the necessity of deploying traffic wardens to regulate traffic for a school near Bonham Road.
Bonham Road is a major district distributor for traffic to and from Central and Western areas. As it is only a single carriageway with two-way traffic, any obstruction will cause widespread and serious congestion, affecting not only private vehicles but also public transport.
It is therefore necessary to regulate the traffic flow. There are five other schools in the vicinity of the school mentioned by your correspondent and there is insufficient kerbside space on Bonham Road for the school buses to pick up and set down students. It is necessary to deploy traffic wardens to regulate the activities of school buses and to facilitate traffic flow to ease traffic congestion in the area.
The police have proposed traffic-engineering solutions to the Transport Department, but as an interim measure, officers will continue to be deployed to regulate traffic in the area for the benefit of all road users.
