A senior police officer and two business people appeared in San Po Kong Court accused of involvement in a multimillion-dollar horse-race bookmaking syndicate. Senior Superintendent Chu Kam-yiu, 53, Addy Chow Chi-wang, 49, and Hon Pui-tak, 61, faced one joint charge of engaging in bookmaking between February 26 and June 21. Hon is further charged with using his flat in Homantin as a gambling establishment.

The court heard that officers from the Independent Commission Against Corruption raided Hon's flat on June 21 after several days of surveillance. They allegedly found slips of paper thrown out of the flat detailing $1.7 million worth of bets, and later found a mini-disc in the flat that was believed to contain information on bets worth $2.7 million, the court heard. No pleas were taken. The three were released on bail ranging from $50,000 to $100,000. Magistrate Kwok Wai-kin adjourned the case to December 12.
