I agree with the comments made by Lingnan University president Dr Edward Chen Kwan-yiu in the story headlined, 'Students lectured for their lack of drive' (South China Morning Post, November 8).
As a distinguished scholar with administrative power, his remarks certainly carry enough weight. Finally, the front-line teachers, who are the workhorses toiling year in and year out, can sigh with relief. Now at least there is a solid piece of credible evidence that a teacher who has failed 70 per cent of students has done the right thing.
In fact, student standards and motivation have been declining steadily for decades and yet overall students' grades do not seem to have budged.
Is it the case that some institutions have hidden behind the facade of a presentable set of grades and that the poor performances of students have been hushed up?
