It's very rare to get a themed soccer series on Hong Kong television. In fact it's hard to think of any previous examples. Most of the programming comprises live and taped matches, highlights and preview shows or magazine programmes such as Futbol Mundial, FIFA TV or the Asian Football Show.
That's why STAR TV's decision to air Match of the Century is so welcome. The programme is a must-see for all fans of the history of the game.
It's a 22-part series of 30 minutes each. STAR are showing two episodes per week and, thanks to their liberal policy on repeat screenings, there are plenty of opportunities to catch each Show.
The basic concept is simple - to profile the eleven best players of the 20th century from both South America and Europe, forming two all-time teams to die for.
Among the legends shown so far or yet to be seen are such great names as Di Stefano, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Cruyff, Platini, Carlos Alberto, Pele, Zico and Kempes.
Each episode looks at one player and episodes alternate between players from each continent. There are several aspects to recommend this show.
First there's the educational side, just learning new things about the legends or learning from scratch about some of the less well known Latin American stars, often in their own words as they reminisce on career highlights.
